This research project website seeks to explore Kongish, especially in social media discourse, in terms of of it and the user of it are being stereotyped and discriminated. Specifically, the theory of translanguaging will be used along to explain the multifaceted definition of Kongish. Furthermore, this study examines the following concepts and theories–the social categorisation theory (Stangor, 2000), the relationship between language and identity (Bolton, 2002), and the idea of youth culture (Bucholtz, 2005) –in a bid to explain how Kongish is gradually being discriminated, and how Kongish is used to construct identitity of Hongkongers (especially the youth in Hong Kong).

Research Questions:
After we have given a brief introduction to our project on the case of Kongish. Let us take you through what will be discussed in the remaining parts of the website. This website is mainly divided into six sections.
Just now, you have already gone through the first section (Introduction) of our webpage, which hopefully should have given you a brief idea of the background of Kongish and our research goals.
The second section (Literature Review) is organised into four subsections, which each of them represents four key concepts or theories. The researches ranges from sociolinguistic to psychology disciplines, in hopes of analysing the research topic through multiple perspective and approaches. We will first summarise and explain the key findings of the previous literatures, then we will associate relative concepts to our research focus. This will hopefully provide a clear theoretical framework for you, our readers, to follow and for us to build our arguments on.
In the third section (Examples), several case studies from all kinds of media, are presented to illustrate the usage of Kongish in different context, and how they demonstrate the polarised attitudes of people towards Kongish, where people either discriminate against it or actively adopt it as a means of communication.
For the forth section (Discussion), we will discuss some interesting and debatable topics, provide possible suggestion to improve the current situation, and finally recommend some directions for further research in the future.
