Course Essentials

Here is where you will find some important information about the course itself and the materials you will need for the class.

Course Description

Course Description from the Cerritos College Catalog:

This course guides the student through the writing process to develop expository prose with an emphasis on effective organization and on correctness. (It meets transfer requirements at four-year institutions.) Transfer Credit: CSU; UC

Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 100 as determined by the Cerritos assessment process. For students in the ESL sequence, completion of ESL 152 or equivalent with a grade of "C" or higher, or of "Pass", is required.

Why this course is important to you.

The skills developed in an English 100 class provide the foundation for the type of critical thinking, reading, and writing you will be expected to do in college and in your career. By strengthening your writing skills, you will be able to communicate your thoughts and ideas more clearly and effectively. Who doesn't want that?

Textbook and Required Materials

Books

You have one required book for this class, Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake. ISBN: 9780618485222

You are welcome to purchase an electronic version of this book, to rent the book from the bookstore, or to borrow the book from the library. It is easily found on Amazon for less than ten dollars.

I recommend a writing handbook, but it is not required. My favorite handbook is Diana Hacker and Nancy Sommers' Rules for Writers. 8th ed. ISBN: 978-131908349

Technology Requirements

In order to participate fully in this class, you will need consistent, reliable access to Canvas and the ability to use various apps (FlipGrid, VoiceThread, Zoom etc.), some of which require you to set up an account (free).

You will also need access to a computer with a webcam or a mobile phone with a video camera approximately five times during the course.

The course is fully accessible through your mobile phone, though some students struggle to write longer papers with only a phone. The Resources section will provide you with some options for accessing a computer and word processing software.
