Welcome!

Greetings From Your Instructor

I'm Kolleen Kalt, and I will be your online instructor for English 100! Welcome to the class!

I know that English is tough for some students, but I truly believe that writing is not a "talent" or a "gift"; it is a set of skills and tools that can be learned and improved upon through practice. In this class, I will share my writer's toolbox with you, and I will support you as you practice, practice, practice! As you expand these skills, you are developing your voice. Each of you has a voice already, and through effective writing, your voice will become stronger, clearer, and louder. My goal is for each of you to feel empowered and confident as you share your voice with the world.

I can't wait to hear what you have to say!

Sincerely,

Kolleen Kalt

How does this course work?

While some online courses are self-paced, this course follows a weekly schedule and is conducted like a "real class," meaning that you will be interacting with your classmates and with me several times each week, though we will all be online at different times of the day (or night!). This will let us learn from one another and support one another as we work towards achieving our learning goals.

  • Since this is a 4-unit class taken in 6 weeks, the course is designed to take about 25-35 hours per week.
  • The course meets for 6 weeks. Each week's modules begin officially on Monday, although I open the modules on Saturdays for those who have more time on the weekends.
  • Assignments will always be due three times each week: Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, always by 11:59 p.m.
  • Schedule 1 hour each Monday (or earlier!) to log in, review the module and assignments, take note of due dates, and plan your week.
  • Plan to log in to the course several times each week in order to have enough time to complete each assignment.

Remember that we are all in this together!

I know this sounds a bit overwhelming, but you are not doing this alone. You can do it!
