Goal
The following information is intended for presenters at health councils who are not health council members or regular attendees. For more detailed information on Health Councils Click Here.
First time attendance
If you are new to the Health Council, reach out to the coordinator to get more information about meeting dates/times, agendas, presentation requests, etc. Once you are invited by the coordinator or other health council member(s), in the spirit of building trusting relationships, please attend health council meetings regularly.
If you attend in anticipation of making a presentation at some point in the future, pay attention to:
Who is presenting? How long are they presenting?
Who’s in the room?
How often do guests speak?
Some health councils have a lot of room for open discussion while others have minimal, some have formal presentations while others are more open and informal. Some health councils have executive committees, core teams etc. that have created their own processes for presenters/participants.
Ready to present?
Before you present, know the health council’s priorities which are included in the fact sheets on the New Mexico Alliance of Health Councils website.
Consider the community's health literacy level and avoid using academic vernacular.
In your presentation, describe how your work connects to the health council’s interests and priorities.
For organizations/entities outside of the health councils ask: How can your work serve the community?
Do you plan on collecting data from the health council?
Any data collection with tribal health councils needs appropriate approval from tribal leaders and the community as well as institutional review boards (IRBs).
Reach out to Gerilyn Antonio (gerilyn@nmhealthcouncils.org) at the New Mexico Alliance of Health Councils for any questions regarding tribal health councils.
Avoid over-surveying the health council.
If you are conducting a survey or engaging in other assessments, evaluations, or research activities, check to see if you can collaborate with others or if the data already exists.
Plan to share the results of your work back with the health council.
Other ways to engage with Health Councils
Join a Health Council committee: Many health councils do their work outside of their larger health council meetings through committees. Joining a committee helps the health council achieve their health priorities and initiatives, help you learn more about the community, and establish relationships.
Share resources, skills, knowledge, data in mutual areas of interest.
Attend monthly Health Councils Talks
Occurs every 1st & 3rd Friday of the month 12-1pm
