Language and Dialect

We know that language is one of the main reasons that prevents people from ethnic minority backgrounds taking part in research.

This is because:

the inclusion/exclusion criteria in many study protocols require participants to be able to read and speak English
participants materials such as information sheets and consent forms are only available in English
the language used in materials such as information sheets and consent forms is often very technical

EMRI offers our research colleagues support to make their studies accessible in a number of languages. Our services include quality assured translation, document review and commentary, and voice overs for videos. If you would like to use these services, please contact us using the form below.

Would you like to be a Language Associate for EMRI?

People taking part in research need information to help them understand what is involved. At EMRI we understand that the best people to create this information are people from different communities in our region. When they help us, they are called Language Associates.

What would I be doing?

Work on translating/back translating/reviewing health research related materials.
Ensure that translated versions “make sense”.
Ensure that the language used is easily understood.
Attend face to face Language workshops.
Take part in discussions on upcoming and existing work.
Opportunities to meet and network with other Language Associates and EMRI.

What skills/qualifications do I need to apply?

A genuine passion for health care, reducing inequalities and for making research more accessible!
Fluency in: Arabic, Bangla or Polish
Must also be fluent in English.
Ability to manage workload and work to deadlines.

We have a process to produce quality assured translated information that can be used for hard copy media (e.g., leaflets) and social media (e.g., videos).

With support from the CRN Yorkshire and Humber Communications Team we created videos that:

talk about conditions that are more prevalent in ethnic minority communities (e.g., sickle cell disease and prostate cancer) and the role of research in finding effective therapies for these conditions
explain how research is carried out so that is safe for people to take part
