LEAD ORGANIZER, University of Waterloo Psychology Discovery Conference, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON.
Dec 2019 - Oct 2020
The University of Waterloo Psychology Discovery Conference (PDC) was held on October 30, 2020, in a virtual setting. Over 250 attendants were recorded as interacting with research produced by members of the University of Waterloo's Psychology department.
The PDC was created in order to promote reciprocal knowledge between the areas and degree levels (undergraduate, graduate, faculty) of the University of Waterloo Psychology department. The key aim of this conference was to promote a sense of community among department members and give students an opportunity to also share their research and knowledge with the wider University of Waterloo community.
In my role as a lead organizer of the PDC, I was responsible for networking with university groups (MITACS, Psychology Undergraduate Student Society, Graduate Studies And Postdoctoral Affairs) to promote goals of conference, as well as securing funding for the conference from university sources.
I worked to promote the conference among psychology students and faculty, and reached out to the wider University of Waterloo and Waterloo community to achieve attendance from a variety of attendees. I was also responsible for maintaining the conference website to organize conference submissions/registration and provide up-to-date information about the conference.
VICE PRESIDENT for the Graduate Association for Students of Psychology (GASP), University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON.
Apr 2019 - May 2020
As Vice President of the Graduate Association for Students of Psychology (GASP), my main roles were to promote a sense of community between graduate students of all areas in the department and act as a liaison between students and administration/faculty to discuss student concerns and questions.
To encourage student connections and support among the psychology graduate community, I organized social events and community get-togethers (e.g. Welcome Week scavenger hunts, campus tours, coffee hours, Bell Let's Talk event).
With the aim of providing multi-faceted opportunities for graduate students, I coordinated a panel on work-life balance with members of the academic community to encourage students to consider their current and future career pursuits. I also collaborated with the University of Waterloo's MITACS office to organize a workshop on the topic of communicating academia-focused skills and how to use these same skills in careers beyond academia.
During the COVID-19 closures that are impacting our university, I have been gathering and sharing resources to assist the graduate students of our department via social media. This includes software sharing, mental and physical well-being activities, and general promotion of community.
