Law, Ethics, and News Literacy

Training and Teaching Staff

Outside of the Publications in Practice course that used to run in previous years at Newton South, the Roar wasn't in the habit of teaching journalistic ethics in previous volumes. The Roar has always been strict, in particular, about editorializing and objectivity, and so I emphasized those points during our training on the Roar's ethical guidelines. Below are the Lion's Roar's updated ethics guidelines as of last year.

Throughout October and November, The Lion's Roar grappled with how to cover the Israel-Hamas war. What is our role as a student publication in this international conflict — this deeply emotional issue for many? Thus, I sought guidance at NSPA: I attended various panels on covering controversial topics and the laws and ethics that back up the Roar. I shared and presented the following notes with the authors of the Israel-Palestine article as well as with all of the Roar staff for future reference.
