Employment & Application Vocabulary

• • Direct Hire 

    • If hired, you will begin working directly and permanently for the company you applied at usually with access to medical benefits and Vacation/Sick leave. 

  • Contract-to-hire

    • If hired, you will initially be a temporary employee without benefits, but with potential to be hired-on permanently at the company, usually after a probationary period. 

  • Contract/Temp 

    • If hired, you will be a temporary (temp) employee without benefits. 

• Resume 

  • This document showcases your entire work history, education, and accomplishments in a linear fashion. Normally only 1-2 pages.  

• Cover Letter 

  • Think 'resume' but more like a story. A cover letter is only 1 page, and more specifically expresses your interest and qualifications for the job you are applying for. 

Abilities 

• • Inherent or natural. The capability to do something. 

  • Examples: Problem Solving, Interpersonal Skills, Leadership.

• Skills 

  • Acquired or learned. The potential to do something very well. 

  • Examples: Data Entry, Employee Training, Excel, Reports, Website development.
