Group Counseling was a course that I was excited for. Initially, I did not recognize the balancing act of group dynamics, theory and all that bringing people together can hold. As we went through the course, we participated in "Growth Groups" to see how the skills and concepts being taught in class played out In real time. I had the privilege of seeing two student counselors lead well. Through their example and the practice we had In class, I felt ready to lead groups.
In practicum, I was able to lead a "Growth Group" of my own with two co-facilitators. Despite our nervousness and anticipation, we were able to take students through psychoeducational curriculum that helped them explore their counseling identities. It was a process I enjoyed and am excited to get to do again in the future.
As I look to the future, I am excited for the possibility to help with groups at my Internship site next semester. Group counseling can create a space of relatability that others may not have known otherwise. Clients can feel empowered through skill based learning, reflections, linking, psychoeducation and more. Building rapport and watching clients grow has to be my favorite part of the process.

Growth Groups is the name of a psychoeducational group that I had the privilege of co-facilitating while in practicum at UTSA's Sarabia Family Counseling Center. Growth Groups consisted of 8 sessions designed to help future counseling students explore and form their counseling identity. Here is a look at the curriculum.
In an elective course, Integrative Behavioral Health II, we were tasked to plan a protocol for patients experiencing acute/chronic stress that come through Primary Care offices. Here is a look at the curriculum I came up with utilizing theories such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
