Crisis Intervention has played a huge role in why I went back to school and within my experience at my internship. Before applying to the CMHC program, I was working with adolescents and many of them were experiencing anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts. Going through suicide prevention trainings and how to evaluate the help they needed was a huge aspect of my job.
Coming into the program and taking Trauma, Crisis and Grief, really put into perspective the importance of not only understanding trauma but how to intervene appropriately. Trainings like CALM, psychological first aid and Crisis Response Planning have been helpful tools to have as I work with populations in need of these skill sets. These trainings and certifications have aided in my ability to understand and apply my knowledge with clients.
As I seek to continue working in a community based clinic, I know and recognize the need to continue educating myself on these skills. You never know what your client is going to experience and being prepared to meet them where they are at is important. Assessing risk, knowing the signs and being prepared to get clients the help they need is imperative to the work we do.
