Counseling theories was structured In a way that helped me get a general understanding of the different ways we can utilize and apply interventions to best help the client. Taking Counseling Theories my first semester was both intimidating and helpful. It provided a base for me to grow upon as I worked to discover my counseling identity throughout the master's program. I have learned quickly that having an integrative approach can be helpful as we encounter clients with different stories, backgrounds, and needs.
When writing my Integrated theories paper at the beginning of the program, I remember feeling overwhelmed having to apply this new Information so quickly. As I decided to choose what theories to write about, I remember being able to see a clear picture of how a Person-Centered Approach and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy align with my values. Creating a space for clients to feel supported while simultaneously providing tools for clients to use to manage their symptoms is a collaborative process I want to be a part of.
Going into internship, my supervisor challenged me to work on a more directive side of counseling. The site I am at Is a community based site that primarily works with underserved populations through referrals. Many of the clients have severe diagnosis and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Trauma Focused therapies work best. I have been learning and utilizing CBT and DBT skills with clients and have been challenging myself to use theories and skills that fit best with the clients needs and goals.
