The EMBO–MBSJ Laboratory Leadership Forum 2026 in Tokyo will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, in the Yushima Campus, Institute of Science Tokyo. This event is officially supported by the Molecular Biology Society of Japan (MBSJ) and EMBO.
EMBO–MBSJ Laboratory Leadership Forum 2026 in Tokyo
This will be the 4th one-day Laboratory Leadership Forum held in Japan. The program will feature lectures and small-group discussions on leadership, research supervision, and the development of early-career researchers – essential elements in building a high-quality research team. While such events are still relatively uncommon in Japan, they have become standard practice in Europe and the United States (https://lab-management.embo.org/dates#group-leaders). This Forum offers a unique opportunity to gain comprehensive insights into independent laboratory management. The Forum will be moderated by an experienced facilitator and conducted in an international setting, with participants joining from overseas. Senior researchers will support the small-group discussions to ensure that participants who are less confident in English can actively engage. This Forum is primarily intended for early-career researchers who aspire to become PIs, as well as those who have recently established their independent laboratories or groups. We also welcome participation from non-members of the Molecular Biology Society of Japan (MBSJ) (limited to 40 participants).

* About the Next-Generation Leader Development Working Group
The Molecular Biology Society of Japan (MBSJ) has established a new working group, the Next-Generation Leader Development Working Group, within its Career Development Committee, which will take over the planning and organization of the "EMBO Laboratory Leadership Course," a laboratory management training program previously organized by Women in Science Japan (WiSJ) and EMBO and held as a satellite event at the MBSJ annual meetings in 2022 and 2024. The program will be renamed the "EMBO–MBSJ Laboratory Leadership Forum."
By providing broader opportunities for society members to learn about laboratory leadership and management, we aim to uphold the core philosophy of WiSJ, which has sought to increase the number of female principal investigators capable of presenting their research on an international stage. At the same time, this initiative is designed to support all researchers aspiring to independence by encouraging them to take the next step forward, while also offering valuable insights to those who are already leading their own laboratories with unique and innovative approaches.
