Climate Science and Climate Justice
University of Oregon Environmental Leadership Program 2023
Our team designed a field trip for middle school students at HJ Andrews Experimental Forest. Using the old-growth forest, we taught students about climate justice, tree identification, phenology, and microclimates. We took an interdisciplinary approach using self-reflection, graphs, conversation, art, and student-led discussions to learn about these topics.
HJ Andrews is on Kalapuya Ilihi and Molalla Land. Due to the Kalapuya Treaty of 1855, these two nations were forcibly removed from this land in the 1850s. They were relocated to the Grand Ronde reservation. Now, many members of these two tribes live at the Grande Ronde reservation, as well as all throughout Oregon and the United States.
