Why did you choose to submit this item?
I chose to submit this item because I had not considered setting up my classroom before attending this class. After a little bit of research, I have realized that there has been research conducted into classroom setup and how it can encourage student learning. I learned a little more about the learning environment for the students. I found this interesting because there is very little on the walls in my pre-internship, and I thought that to be a little strange. That said, I believe my coop teacher does an excellent job and perhaps adding a word wall or anchor charts is nice but not required. I see the classroom setup as an opportunity to incorporate some research into my class and see what works for my students and me.
Course Goals:
How can literacy learning theories be applied in the classroom?
I see classroom set up as another way to promote student engagement and literacy. In the Week 9 class, we discussed the importance of creating an environment where students feel valued and capable of learning. By establishing a welcoming environment that considers literacy promotion, it can support the routines and interactions of the classrooms.
Which course concepts/ideas are reflected in the activity?
The concepts reflected are the promotion of literacy through the physical environment. A comfortable and purposely designed classroom can be a great tool in the importance of literacy to students. As Saskatoon Public School Reads (2017) document indicates, a physical environment should:
have intentionality and purpose that is carefully planned before instruction;
are functional and adaptable;
are organized to support the use of instructional approaches, including areas for whole class, small group and individual learning;
reflect the strengths, needs and interests of all students; and
are aesthetically inviting to students because their interests, cultures, learning and work are present within the walls of the classroom. (p.9)
By using these ideas and incorporating and experimenting with what could work with my students, I’m excited that it could impact their learning.
How has your thinking about the activity changed over the semester? What more would you like to learn about this activity?
My thinking has changed because I did not consider the physical space’s impact on the students and I've learned that it may have a big impact. I have since read some articles that indicate areas of research conducted to promote learning in the classroom and the impact of the physical space. I particularly enjoyed the Gonzalez (2018) article that highlighted some great ideas to incorporate into the classroom. Concepts such as a space for creation and areas for quiet (Gonzalez, 2018) are exciting, and I would like to see how they would benefit my students.
