Pharos is the program that the Timberland Regional Library uses to handle all of our printing. Each person who has a card with TRL is able to print 100 FREE pages per week and after that, every page they print costs them 10¢. We will walk through everything you need to know to help people print from either our internet computers or their personal devices.
If we want to print from their our digital devices, we can go to printing.trl.org. Once the page loads, this screen below will come up asking us to put in our library card information and sign in.
Once signed in we'll be able to upload documents, manage the files we've uploaded, and see how many free pages we have left. Here's where things get a bit tricky: Since every page costs 10¢ to print and the library gives each patron 100 free pages per week, when anyone signs in to print they'll see $10.00 on their account. Some people will look at that and think that means that they owe us $10 and flip their wig. At that point, you can clarify that they do not owe $10, but that in fact they have a $10 credit for printing! This is a mythical $10, obviously. They can't come up and ask us to give them those $10. No one's tried that yet as far as I know, but you never know people.
To add files to Pharos, we can click on the Upload button near the top left. Once we do that, a new window will appear asking us what files we want to upload. The current file formats Pharos is able to print are Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, PDF, text and images, and Visio (whatever that is). When we see the file we want to print, we can either double-click on the file or click “open” on the bottom right. In theory, everything should upload without any problems, but there are times when certain files just refuse to play nice with Pharos. If you are helping a patron and are having issues at any point, please feel free to ask for help from library staff.
After their files have been uploaded, they can walk up to our print stations and release their jobs from there. They can scan their library card or type in their card number and PIN. Patrons can release individual jobs by selecting one and hitting the PRINT button on the touchscreen. If they want to print everything they've uploaded, they can press the PRINT ALL button and soon after, their jobs should begin printing. Please take a moment to admire these low-res images illustrating the process. ♪
There are times when the print station will show error messages telling people to "contact Pharos support." This is completely normal, and if it happens, be assured that it is nothing you or the patron did wrong. Just tell people to exit the error message and try signing on again. That will fix the problem most of the time. Computers and smartphones have advanced to the point where most things happen instantaneously. Printers however, still have a long way to go and require a bit of patience and love.
If someone wants to print from one of our internet computers, they’ll have to print documents as they would normally by either clicking on the printer icon, or by pressing CTRL + P on their keyboard. When they do that, a little window that looks very similar to this one on the right will pop up asking if they are sure they want to print. Have them click “Yes” and their print job will be sent to the print station. Then you can show them how to release their jobs at the print station.
