Library staff can help with most anything our patrons need. Anything from placing holds, updating information, assisting in paying fines, renewing items, and more. We are more than happy to help people do things with their library account, but sometimes, patrons like to do things themselves. Most services nowadays are allowing people the freedom to do more things themselves. People have gained so much control that anyone can deposit checks, view their balance, and spend money without ever going to the bank! This lesson will go over some of the things people can do with their account by signing into the TRL website.
First thing we’re going to want to do is hit the My Account link in the top right corner of the screen by the search box. Once we click that we’ll be directed to a login screen. After we input our information, as we’ve done many times before throughout these tutorials, let’s click Log In.
After we’re signed in, we can see ALL of our library card info under the Personal Information section! So much of it, in fact, that I had to censor mine for the screencaps! Now that’s what I call Personal Information! If anything happens to be out of date, patrons can click on the handy Edit buttons on the top right of each section. When we click those, certain fields will become editable and we can update those as the need arises. We can also change our PIN, Preferences, SMS Notifications, and change our email by clicking on and expanding each of the dropdown sections.
Let’s click on the Checkouts tab. The Checkouts tab will show you everything you currently have out, including digital checkouts. A great benefit of this is that you can also renew items through here. No need to trek down to the library or call anyone. All we have to do is select the items we would like to renew using the checkboxes, and hit the Renew button up at the top. Had I been doing this more frequently, I probably wouldn’t have so many fines on my account. Oof! (We'll get to that later)
Then we have the Holds tab. Here people have the option to cancel holds they no longer want, edit their pickup location, suspend their holds (which basically means put a halt on the hold for a period of time), and cancel those suspensions. To alter the holds, we click on the checkboxes next to the items and then choose what we want to do with them by clicking the boxes at the top.
Last, but not least, is the Fines tab. There we can take care of all of fines in one place (using a credit card of course)! We can pay as many fines as we'd like on here, or pay just one. By clicking on the checkboxes to the right of each fines they'll be added to the total amount at the bottom of the page. When we're ready to submit our payment, we can click on the Make Payment box. That will take us to a form when we can put in more personal information and take care of them fines once and for all! One last thing to bring up with fines; if you see a giant red exclamation point in the Fines tab or the right sidebar, it means you have fines on your account! How subtle!
