I woke up at 06h00 which is my normal work-day wake-up time. It was a lot colder than I expected so I had my beanie, buff, gloves and warm jacket on.
I made a flask of hot water to enjoy on the 4x4 trail. By then Mike had woken up and emerged from his Trailer Tent and I prepared our first cup of coffee and rusks for the day.
A fellow LROC Member had deflated his Defender’s tyres too much and I used the compressor in my vehicle to pump his tyres to the correct pressure to cope with the rocks and loose gravel along the trail.
We left camp at 08h00 and completed a 18,4km 4x4 route that peaked as 2263m. The trail took 06:19 hours to complete. There were many very steep ascents and descents that included large axle twisters, small loose rocks and some large fixed rocks - These required low range 1st gear to overcome. Of the 9 vehicles, only one had an incident where the vehicle slid into deep ruts and had to be towed off it’s belly so that it could get traction.
A Discovery needed help
The 4x4 Trail included many steep gradients - Highest point was 2263m
We spent about an hour at the 3 Provinces Beacon on top of the mountain enjoying the view and lunch before descending back to camp.
Everyone arrived back at camp in high spirits with no damage to vehicle or pride. Mike informed everyone that we had to meet at the farmhouse at 08h00 on Sunday Morning for the battlefield tour which meant vehicles had to depart from the camp site at 07h30.
A number of campers wanted to watch the Rugby match between the British Lions and South African Springboks later in the afternoon. The site had extremely poor to no Vodacom mobile reception. One camper had an MTN Mobile phone and DTSV so they streamed the rugby match via their mobile phone with 8 people gathered around to watch. The rest of us gathered around the fire and braaied. Every now and again we received the score. The Springbok defeat of the Lions was a fantastic outcome and the camp erupted with joy when the final whistle blew. While the older species of us went to bed at about 10h00, the younger species carried on celebrating the win until 02h00 in the morning.
