I am very glad I did this trip as it reminded me how the Land Rover Owner Club (LROC) attracts great down-to-earth people who are super friendly, passionate about their vehicles and the environment.
It was great to re-discover the terrific capabilities of my 20 year old Land Rover Defender 90. One needs to remember that this is one of the few vehicles where you could walk into a dealership and buy and then go on a 4x4 adventure without having to make any modifications to tackle very challenging obstacles.
The 4x4 trails provided breathtaking views that liberate your thinking and gives hope for the future.
The battlefields experience was a great awakening of the history of South Africa and how blood was spilt to protect the lives and property of a sovereign country and it’s citizens. It is also a reminder how cruel people can be by scorching the earth and imprisoning citizens in concentration camps where 25% of inhabitants died from hunger, disease, hyperthermia, and malnutrition in order for the aggressors to gain power and riches.
This reminded me of the recent insurrection in South Africa that resulted in the destruction of property, theft of goods and threat to civil society and indicates how destructive bad politics can be, where the rights of citizens have become meaningless and need to defend themselves against aggressors, similar to what the Boere endured on a much worse scale. I pray that South Africa finds a solution to a safe, stable and prosperous future for all its citizens.
