I am a well rounded Honors student at IUPUI and am very passionate about my studies and relationships, while staying involved on campus as well. I am the VP Chapter Relations and Standards of my sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, where I facilitate honest and difficult conversations that hold our members accountable in terms of the chapter bylaws. Additionally, I uphold a high GPA and complete volunteer hours in a timely fashion. These experiences keep me busy, yet involved and inspired to continue pursuing my future career as a gynecologist.  

Reflection: When writing this statement, I was a freshman here at IUI and had minimal campus or community engagement. I had a couple friends, and felt nervous about the years to come. I was worried about what research opportunities I could get, if I'd even be "good enough" to earn any. At the time, I was just taking things day by day because I was so fearful of failing, but looking back I had many things to be proud of.

I am a well-rounded honors student in and outside of the classroom with areas that need improvement. I want to become an honest and dedicated individual who is committed to improving her personal qualities within her interpersonal relationships. I want to use honesty and dedication in facilitating healthy and mature conversations with my peers when conflicts do arise. I am working towards these goals, but I would like to improve my communication skills further. I want to approach these conversations with honesty, meaning that I am honest about my feelings while showing my dedication to resolving said conflict. I also want to continue empathizing with others and being a person that they can depend on in all facets of life.

Additionally, I want to uphold my high GPA, as I am now, and continue to increase it as my undergraduate journey progresses. In order to do this, I want to attend all of my classes on time and fully participate to accomplish all of my goals. I want to accomplish some of my future goals in medicine by applying for the LHSI internship which will prepare me to work in the healthcare setting.

Using the work ethic developed in my academics and internship, I want to become the president of my sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, by the time I am a junior at IUPUI. I am currently VP Chapter Relations and Standards (second in command) which means that I am on the right track to achieve my goals. This presidential experience will prepare me for the rigor of medical school because I want to become an obstetrician/gynecologist with a surgical specialty.

By accomplishing all of these goals, I want to become an improved and well-rounded Honors student and individual outside of IUPUI. I want to continue to use perseverance and apply it to my future career in college and medicine, as I will face many obstacles.

Reflection: I felt very empowered while reflecting back on this statement because the young woman who was taking H200 was strong and dedicated in all aspects of life. When writing this statement, I was a freshman that again had minimal on campus opportunities other than my sorority. However, I had a strong passion for education and leadership coming out of highschool and felt eager to learn as much as I could in only four years.

Introduction: One thing that has remained constant since H200 is that I am still a well rounded Honors student at IUPUI and am very passionate about my studies and relationships, while staying involved on campus. One new opportunity is that I am a research assistant working with Dr. Michelle Miller through the IU School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. I facilitate qualitative interviews with newly postpartum mothers to gather data regarding the gap in patient provider communciation. Refer to my research journey below:

Lastly, I uphold a high GPA and prioritize my focus on mastering difficult concepts rather than just getting the right answer. I now understand that education and learning isn't just for the grade, as stressful as it is, but rather a deeper understanding of concepts pertaining to your future career. These experiences have kept my schedule full, yet I feel pride in the way I've pursued my future career as a gynecologist during my four years at IUI.

Reflection: Updating this statement as compared to the one I wrote in H200 filled me with a strong sense of pride, as I reflected on who I was then to the accomplished young woman I am now. I was very nervous coming into college and in H200 regarding the opportunities I may or may not earn that are essential for my career path. I thoroughly enjoyed highlighting my undergraduate successes because it exemplifies the growth I've undergone, as well as the final steps necessary to achieve my dream of becoming a physician.

Introduction: My career goal established in my prior statement made in H200 remains steadfast, as I still aspire to become an OB/GYN. Despite the significant adversity I've faced in my undergraduate career, it has only made me work harder for the future I desire.

Since H200 I have continued attending my classes in a consistent and timely fashion. Additionally, I applied for the LHSI program over a year ago and was mutually selected for my #1 ranked research lab. I have flourished significantly in that opportunity, so much so that I applied to the UROP program for the same research lab. I am now going on my second year in this position with the same supervisor and have been blessed to train incoming research assistants. Traumatic Birth Experiences

This experience has confirmed that I want to work in women's health, specifically as an OB/GYN because I know from first hand and second hand experience what it's like to be in a vulnerable position where you don't feel heard.

Reflection: I felt extremely inspired and empowered while both juxtaposing it to my goals in H200 and redefining them in H496. I loved acknowledging my accomplishments in research and confirming the career goal I've had since I was two years old.

When I designed my first journeymap, I was a freshman starting my second semester as an Honors student at IUI, while majoring in Biology and getting involved within my sorority. At the time, I reflected back on the parts of life that made me who I was at that time which included the source of my medical passion, courses I took, jobs I held, and new experiences started at this university in 2022. My passion for medicine came from wayching my mom endure cancer treatment for ocular melanoma, as well as personal experiences enduring medical trauma.

My passion for medicine was further developed by a longterm job I held in high school at a nursing home for elderly nuns where I'd assist them in activities of daily living. 

These activities included bathing, dressing, feeding, and just improving their quality of life by facilitating fun activities such as Bingo Night. See the picture of me on the way to my job up above!

Reflecting back on my H200 JourneyMap, it's fascinating to acknoweledge how much I've grown as well as how much I've accomplished. I recall feeling overwhelmed initially while making this because I wasn't sure what steps I needed to take to accomplish my end goal of becoming a physician specializing in the OB/GYN field.

Since then, I've broadened my leadership and research experience which allowed me to make an updated journeymap that I like much better. Given that I was unsure of the steps I needed to take when making this, the journeymap primarily focuses on past accomplishments rather than steps leading towards my career. Despite this, I still completed essential requirements for my future career in medicine!

Comparing this H496 JourneyMap to my H200 one,  is such a breath of fresh air because I feel that the visual appeal and physical content of the graphic is much better. This juxtaposition is also applicable to the Honors student I was then versus the Honors student I am now. Back then, I struggled to manage my time as a brand new college student, my life felt messy, and I didn't know how I was going to gain leadership or research experience. However, I realized the scariest step is always the first one!

This map is much more visually appealing and is applicable to the accomplished senior that authored this eportfolio. My life feels much more organized, I manage my time well between school, my two jobs, my sorority, and my relationships. Additionally, I have a clear view of what I want my future to look like and the steps necessary to achieve my dreams.
