I completed research on the historical progression of racism in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, given my interest in the career path. My paper is called Gynecological Procedures and Prejudice where I outline the establishment of racism in this field by J. Marion Sims, the Father of Modern Gynecology. Additionally, I addressed the institutionalized racism present in the medical field which has affected individuals such as Serena Williams during her pregnancy. 

I was previously an intern for the perinatal postraumatic stress lab ran by Dr. Michelle Miller. In this lab, I interviewed women who have recently given birth to determine whether their experience was traumatic. Through these conversations, I recruited participants for the study in which Dr. Miller aids their experience with PTSD! I worked primarily at Riley Maternity Tower. I have absolutely loved this internshipl! I previosuly worked in the LHSI program for Honors credit and later transitioned to the UROP program.  This artifact is from the LHSI showcase last spring that I presented to fellow students and potential employers. The communication and time management skills that I have learned from this internship are so valuable for my future career. Additionally, I've learned the type of work environment I enjoy, my communication style, and have gained the ability to accept constructive criticism.

The following artifact is a case study project I completed with a partner in my genetics lab. I thoroughly enjoyed this project because I got to dive into the scientific and genetic reasoning behind Alzheimer's while learning how to diagnose based on symptoms. This skill is essential for my future career as a physician which is a part of the reason I took pride in this work. Additionally, Alzheimers is a topic that hits close to home because of a previous job I upheld for four years in highschool. I worked as a nurses aid in an all-female memory care unity where the majority of my patients had Alzheimers or some other form of dementia. I cared for multiple patients over the years with these disease, so it was interesting to learn the neuroscience and genetics behind it. 

I completed a Journey Map for my Honors 200 course where I described significant life events that led me to the present moment in college and the steps that I will take to achieve my future goals. By completing this assignment, I was happy to reflect on the things that I've been through and how they have influenced my success and goals in college. Through experiencing significant trauma, I was able to gain a passion for the obstetrics and gynecology field and this passion keeps me working hard each day in my undergraduate academics.  

I also recently completed a group project in my Honors 200 course where we researched and presented prevalent bias's and syndromes among college students, specifically imposter syndrome. I learned that this can lead to self doubt amongst students even though they may not express it outwardly. It even unfortunately effects the grades of students due to the mental toll it takes on students. By presenting this to the class, I reflected and learned that I am not alone in my struggles which made me feel significantly better. See the embedded slideshow!
