This course had three challenges to work on with a partner and one final individual assessment. Challenges are considered difficult, as we are given a topic to investigate and make our own procedures. Grade was given based on accuracy and precision. Each lab was 3 hours, and met twice a week. This challenge was to find the concentration of red dye 40 within a specific mixture using spectrophotometry.
This course focuses on ecology, how ecosystems function, and methods of studying them. The discussion portion of this class focuses on writing an ecology format literary analysis regarding an assigned topic. My topic covers invasive species in mangrove ecosystems. I spent the entire semester writing and revising this paper and looking into multiple different scopes of work.Â
This course had me working directly with professors and their labs, aiding in their research. I worked in a herpetology lab with Dr. Kinsey Brock, looking at how canyon size correlates to canyon size in urban San Diego. This study shows morphological differences due to urbanization in San Diego County. However this study was conducted in a short time, not much data was collected and all data should be interpeted with caution.
In this course, I developed a strong foundation in ArcGIS Pro and core GIS principles, including spatial analysis, map projections, satellite data collection, and LiDAR processing. For the final project, my team built an ArcGIS StoryMap analyzing the relationship between Roosevelt Elk population dynamics and changing vegetation density. Despite facing significant challenges with sparse population data and obscured Landsat imagery, we successfully organized complex datasets and produced the clear, impactful spatial visualizations displayed here.
