The Marching Blue & Gold is the most visible aspect of the Elkhorn South Band Program, renowned for its contributions to school spirit and community pride. The marching band performs at home football games (pregame and halftime), competes in local marching competitions, and serves as a dynamic musical outlet for its members. Open to all students in grades 9-12, the program offers two participation options to suit varying interests and time commitments:
Competitive Band: Designed for students seeking a high-caliber experience, the competitive band challenges participants with advanced repertoire and drill. While no auditions are required, members must commit to rigorous rehearsals, high performance standards, and multiple fall competitions.
Campus Band: A non-competitive, non-auditioned option with a lower time commitment, perfect for students heavily involved in other fall activities or those who prefer the concert band setting. Campus Band allows participation in marching without the intensity of competitions.
Both options ensure all students can participate in the celebrated program while finding the balance that works best for them.
Elkhorn South offers three concert bands: Freshman Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble. After the marching season, students audition and are placed in either the Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band to finish out the first semester. At the end of the first semester, grades 10-12 audition for chair placement and assignment in either ensemble for the second semester, while freshman transition to the Freshman Band.
These ensembles provide opportunities for musicians of all levels to develop their skills, perform advanced repertoire, and grow as artist within a supportive and dynamic environment.
The Elkhorn South Band Program features two auditioned jazz ensembles: Parkway Band and Blue Sage Band. Directed by Mr. Nelsen, Parkway Band is the varsity-level ensemble, while Blue Sage, directed by Mr. Senff, serves as the junior varsity group. Both ensembles rehearse 2-3 times per week and compete at local and regional jazz festivals, including the celebrated "Night of Stars" event held by the Elkhorn Southside Bands each year.
Jazz members explore a wide range of jazz styles spanning various eras and are required to participate in a concert band unless granted special permission by the directors for rhythm section instruments that are not typically found in the concert bands.
The Pep Band is a vital part of school spirit at Elkhorn South, performing at pep rallies, sports events, and other activities throughout the school year. Directed by the band staff, the Pep Band energizes audiences and supports school athletic teams during the regular and postseason contests, including traveling to state tournaments.
Students sign up for one of the two Pep Bands at the start of the school year. Participation in these performances is required as a part of the band curriculum, fostering both musical growth and community involvement.
Live Wire is the Elkhorn South High School premier show band, providing live music for all three of the school's show choirs. This auditioned ensemble showcases talented instrumentalists who bring energy and professionalism to each performance.
Auditions are held in the fall, and the group performs during the show choir season from January through March. Live Wire is a vital part of the show choir experience, elevating every performance with dynamic, high-quality music.
