Liza Brover CV
I am a third year PhD student in economics at Yale University. My research interests are in the economic history of the Soviet Union. I am interested in how state-sponsored repression and ideology affect economic outcomes.
Before coming to Yale, I studied Mathematical Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. I was born and raised in California, but now call Maryland home.
I love to powerlift and work on my podcast, Economic History Soup.
Data projects
Stalin Surveys, 1936-1938
I received the ISPS survey grant to digitize roughly 13,000 individual-level surveys collected by the Central Statistical Committee of the Soviet Union. The surveys cover several cities in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, and contain information about working youths' educational and occupational background, ownership of cultural items, readership of books and viewership of movies.
Soviet Party Censuses, 1922, 1926
I am working with Yale Libraries and the Hoover Institution to digitize roughly 900,000 individual-level census entries from the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The data includes information on education, occupation, military service, party service, and political activity.
