Penn College Fed Challenge Team

Founder and Captain, August 2019 - Fall 2021

I am the founder of Penn's College Fed Challenge team. In the past three competition cycles, we have won regional level awards and national level awards.

The National College Fed Challenge is a competition for undergraduate students in which teams of five analyze and present suggestions for macroeconomic policy. The competition consists of two rounds. In the first round, teams of up to five students present a fifteen minute speech on the state of the macroeconomy, current trends, and suggestions for monetary policy at the local Fed. Following the speech, the team is questioned for fifteen minutes by the representatives of the Fed that are judging the competition. The best team from the first round advances to the second round at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. More information about the competition is available here.

I explored which variables contributed to a successful classroom using a random forest decomposition method. I developed a three stage method using a value-added model, random forests, and mediation analysis and applied it to the Mexican primary school setting. Currently, this is a working paper with my friend Anahita Kumar.

I worked with Mexican administrative and census data in order to construct a dataset of student wages. I worked on debiasing wage data using a Heckman selection model with municipal fixed effects.

Climate Econometrics Group

The group generates and reviews econometric climate models and prepares for and discusses climate seminars. I help with data cleaning and visualization. The group met weekly until mid 2022, but is currently paused.

Penn Undergraduate Research Mentorship Program
Summer 2019

My work with Dr. Abito started during PURM, a research program for freshmen and sophomores at Penn. We have continued working on a series of projects since then. We examine the relationship between the WIC infant formula auction and subsequent purchasing behavior of WIC and non-WIC households. We build a demand model of infant formula purchases conditional on household characteristics. We identify a money-metric consumer bias term from the residuals of the demand model. We build a supply model using WIC auction data. We are currently working on the creation of a production function estimation method with two-way fixed effects.

We identified the influence of large corporations on grassroots movements for campaign legislation related to alcohol, sugar, and tobacco taxes using Crimson Hexagon software. I wrote Python code to access Twitter API and extract users relevant to such movements in order to analyze their profiles for bot probability.
