Outreach and Service Activities

Common Thread is a non-profit organization for teens in Utah who have been impacted by the foster care system, various forms of childhood trauma, or other vulnerable realities. Common Thread provides an inclusive community, resources, safety, and connection for these teens. I currently serve as the mentor for the Common Thread Teen Advisory Board.

The Education Justice Project is a model college-in-prison program that provides access to upper level University of Illinois courses to men at the Danville Correctional Center. I worked with EJP from Fall 2017 - Spring 2020. During this time, I served as a Writing and Math Partner and also helped to organize and run several mathematics workshops. In 2020, I ran a mathematical biology workshop where we explored various models of disease spread both mathematically and computationally.

The Illinois Geometry Lab has as its mission to support undergraduate research within the Department of Mathematics at UIUC, as well as to engage with the larger community through outreach events. I served as the graduate student mentor for three semesters where I worked with teams of undergraduate students on research projects. The team I lead on the project Mathematical model of gender bias and homophily in professional hierarchies was awarded the 2019 IGL Research Award. I have also participated in various outreach activities run by the IGL. In particular, I was a co-organizer of the 2020 Winter Math Carnival in honor of Julia Robinson. You can read more about the Math Carnival here.

Sonia Math Day is a day-long event for high school girls hosted by the UIUC AWM. I participated in several of these events and most recently organized and led activities which introduced students to the topology and geometry of surfaces.

Girls Engaged in Math and Science is a series of two-hour weekend math enrichment workshops for middle school girls. In addition to participating in several of these events, I organized and led a workshop on math and origami for the Math and Art series in Spring 2018.
