Math and Dance

In the summer of 2022, I conducted a week-long creative research lab with dancers at Utah Valley University to explore how the mathematical principles of geometry and topology could by physicalized through movement and realized expressively through choreography. This project was a collaborative effort with dancers Hannah Fischer, Sarah Donohue, composer Nate Anderson, and students from the UVU dance department. 

Throughout the week, I introduced the dancers to concepts from geometry and topology, and then worked with them to explore these concepts through movement. Below, you can see a short documentary of the process, as well as the final screen dance. In the dance, you can see the students' interpretations of the notions of continuous (and discontinuous) deformations of surfaces, infinity, perspective, and space.
