I am a Postdoctoral researcher specialising in volcanic multi-hazard risk.
My work focuses on quantifying the risks that populations and assets face from volcanic eruptions across local to global scales.
I develop and analyse hazard, exposure, vulnerability, and impact datasets, as well as tools and frameworks, to support disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
Research Interests
During my PhD at Nanyang Technological University, I quantified the impacts of lava flows through ground-based and aerial post-eruption damage assessments and developed empirical models for forecasting lava flow impacts on buildings.
During a Postdoc at the Earth Observatory of Singapore, I expanded this work to the global scale, analysing how the exposure of cities to volcanic hazards is changing over time.
In my Postdoc at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, I explored the potential impacts of large magnitude eruptions.
Beyond impact assessment and spatio-temporal changes in exposure, I am particularly interested in how volcanic hazards interact with other risks in multi-hazard environments across different spatial scales.
Approaches
I have led and contributed to a number of funded research projects as Principal Investigator, developing new approaches to volcanic and multi-hazard risk assessment.
My work integrates geospatial analysis, impact modelling, and remote sensing techniques to produce data driven insights into hazard and risk.
By developing tools and datasets to support risk assessment, my research aims to inform disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and decision-making, ultimately contributing to more resilient communities.
I am also committed to ethical and inclusive approaches to disaster research.
Other activities
Alongside my research, I am passionate about teaching and student development. I hold the Dutch University Teaching Qualification (UTQ).
I am actively involved in the academic and volcanology community and serve on the:
- University of Twente Postdoctoral Network Board,
- IAVCEI Cities and Volcanoes Commission,
- IAVCEI Volcanic Hazards and Risk Commission.
