How The Amazing Race: Science Edition Works
In this classroom adventure, students aren’t just completing assignments — they’re racing across the world (and through science content) one challenge at a time! Teams of students will face tasks that mirror real science skills while learning how to collaborate, compete, and conquer new material.
Each student is part of a team competing in a race through a “Scope” — a themed leg of the race based on specific science standards. Their goal? Make it to the Pit Stop by mastering the content through tasks, challenges, and checkpoints that connect directly to what they’re learning.
Here’s how it all works:
🧭 Progressing in the Race
Students earn points and advance by completing tasks like:
Answering questions correctly during discussions or quizzes
Completing homework and practice assignments
Participating in STEAM challenges, escape rooms, and team-based detours
Demonstrating mastery on final tests or projects
The better students perform in class, the more successful their team becomes in the race. Science performance is directly tied to game success!
⚠️ Setbacks and Second Chances
Just like in the real Amazing Race, challenges aren’t always smooth sailing. If a student:
Doesn’t complete homework
Disrupts the team’s progress
Shows a lack of participation
…they might hit a Speed Bump, receive a U-Turn, or temporarily lose privileges in the race. These aren’t punishments — they’re opportunities to reflect and reset. Tasks like completing IXL practice, attending tutoring, or writing a quick reflection help students get back on track.
🔁 Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
Students are stronger when they work together. They may be called on to:
Support a teammate who’s struggling
Collaborate in a challenge
Rescue another team or share a Salvage Pass
This builds real-world teamwork, accountability, and empathy — all while reinforcing science skills in creative ways.
🏆 Real Rewards for Real Learning
Students can unlock real-life benefits along the way:
Skip a quiz with a Fast Forward
Use earned privileges like listening to music during independent work
Choose their challenge or get a head start with a Salvage or Express Pass
These rewards are earned by doing well in class — and the better they do in The Amazing Race, the stronger their understanding of science becomes.
💰 Race Funds (Team Currency System)
At the beginning of each leg of the race, teams will receive a set amount of Race Cash. How they spend (or save) this money can affect their standing in the game!
💼 Teams can use their funds to:
“Purchase” forgotten supplies (e.g., pencil = $10, highlighter = $15, etc.)
Buy “hints” during a difficult escape room or quiz
Contribute toward classroom incentives or privileges
Enter raffles or auctions for bonus rewards
Purchase small real-world prizes (only if team places in top 3 for that leg)
As students race through each Scope, they build knowledge, develop soft skills, and find motivation in a unique, fun, and purposeful way. What once felt like a chore now feels like a challenge worth conquering.
It’s more than a game — it’s a journey to science mastery!
