ABOUT ME
I am a researcher working on Ancient Greek and Anatolian languages and epigraphy with a growing experience in Digital Humanities and Data Science. My research focuses on linguistic diversity in the ancient world and, more recently, on developing machine learning tools to work with fragmentary data.
My research starts from two questions: can we piece together the scattered fragments of languages attested mostly on stone, and bring back to us the people who spoke them, whether an entire city speaking a forgotten Anatolian dialect or a community of hard-working sailors with their naval jargon? And how can we design and implement digital tools that engage all the complexities of the linguistic and epigraphic research?
I was born in the ancient Etruscan city of Fiesole, near Firenze, and I have been passionate about ancient languages and histories for as long as I can remember. My grandmother Marialuisa began teaching me Latin and Greek when I was six: it was love at first sight! My fascination with data science and the ways digital techniques can bridge with the humanities began during my PhD, and it continues to grow as I strive to learn more and to find new ways to design and apply them.
