There are many different seasonal field and administrative jobs within the Forest Service. These seasonal positions have a maximum six (6) month work schedule. The anticipated start date for these positions is early May, but could be sooner. We recommend that you apply to any job for which you qualify.
Duties may vary depending on the position. A valid driver’s license may also be required. Hours usually consist of a 40 hour work week, Monday-Friday, and some positions may require work on weekends. Work may be physically demanding and may involve a variety of weather conditions.

Recreation
Recreation positions are offered in developed, OHV, and wilderness recreation sites. Duties include; Serves as primary public contact at campgrounds, trailheads, information stations; Educate and inform visitors of rules and opportunities; Enforce rules and regulations; Collect campground fees and perform maintenance; Collect data and monitor visitor use; Perform trail maintenance/construction and patrol; Support projects and goals of the Recreation and Resources programs; Ensuring campground facilities and cabins are maintained. These position are primarily field-going positions. Work may be performed in remote locations. Work schedules require working weekends and on holidays. May work in adverse weather conditions.
Visitor Services
Visitor services primarily perform work in a visitor center setting and provides customer service/visitor information. Job duties may include: providing excellent customer service by enthusiastically answering questions, greeting and assisting visitors; Working closely with recreation and wilderness staff, interns, seasonal and permanent staff to provide current and accurate information within a welcoming environment for visitors; Informing visitors of rules and regulations, safety risks and recreational opportunities; Assisting with tracking visitor use; Responding to radio traffic in support of recreation, wilderness and law enforcement personnel; Assisting in management of cabin and wilderness reservations; Administrative work including computer programs, paperwork, filing, answering multi-line phones, cleaning and organization at the Visitor Information desk.
Forestry - Timber
Forestry positions are available across the forest for Timber Sale Prep and Timber Stand Improvement positions and may include the following duties: Independently applies silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber, brings to the attention of responsible individuals situations on the ground that are inconsistent with guidelines; acts as a certified timber cruiser; Independently applies the instructions issued in a cruise plan; Takes and records tree measurements, assesses quality, and determines defect, prepares and computer processes cruise data; Traverses harvest unit boundaries, road locations, and determines area; Inspects silvicultural contract work for compliance with contract; Examines sapling and larger stands to collect and record data on stocking, density, condition, insects, disease, site index, and ground vegetation; Examines plantations to assess numbers of tree seedlings present, condition, and growth and survival rates, and evidence of animal, insect or disease damage; Selects prospective parent seed trees using established procedures to determine which trees have superior growth characteristics; May work in adverse weather conditions and adverse terrain.
Archaeology
Archaeology Technician positions are available across the Eldorado National Forest. Come learn about, discover and protect cultural resources. Cultural resources provide important windows into our past. As an archaeology technician, you will be conducting surveys in areas of proposed forest projects, identifying and recording archaeological resources according to established standards and procedures. The job is a field-going position, but also includes a significant office portion, including preparing reports/site records, creating maps and updating the Heritage databases. Field work is often in remote, rugged locations and may require work in adverse weather conditions. Familiarity with GPS equipment and mapping software are valuable skills to have. May work in adverse weather conditions and adverse terrain. Driving a manual transmission vehicle may be required.
Botany
Biological Technician positions will be offered for both a botany crew and an invasive plant crew. As a member of the botany crew your duties would include conducting field surveys for rare plants across the forest. As a member of the invasive plant crew your duties would include surveying for and treating invasive plant populations. Additional duties for both crews may include monitoring, working on restoration projects and some limited opportunities for environmental education. These positions are primarily field-going positions and work is performed in remote, rugged locations and may require work in adverse weather conditions. Familiarity with plant identification and California flora is a must, as is the ability to safely operate vehicles on rough roads. Proficiency using GPS equipment, topographic maps and mapping software is desired. May work in adverse weather conditions and adverse terrain.
Wildlife
Wildlife positions are available across the forest and may include the following duties: Assists in the acquisition of field data be measuring and recording pertinent biological information peculiar to wildlife; Uses botanical key to identify plants encountered during field trips or surveys of Forest areas; Assists in the collection, handling, and preservation of specimens; Records all biological data pertinent to collections and preservation. May work in adverse weather conditions and adverse terrain.
Fisheries
Various fisheries positions are available across the forest and may include the following duties: Assists in the acquisition of field data be measuring and recording pertinent biological information peculiar to fisheries; Assists in the collection, handling, and preservation of specimens; Records all biological data pertinent to collections and preservation. May work in adverse weather conditions and adverse terrain.
