Concept Note

ELC SXC RANCHI

The Department of Political Science at St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi, established way back in the year 1950, has been crusading for more than six decades to achieve its dual goals of acquiring specialized knowledge in the field of political study and the development of general skills among students that will serve them regardless of their future course of study or employment. The establishment of the Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) at the Department is another landmark step in this direction. The Club, first of its kind in Jharkhand, is established under the Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program of the Election Commission of India. Established in July, 2017, a major objective behind the formation of the ELC at the department is to make young and future voters electorally literate. The Club which is purely apolitical and non-partisan in nature strictly prohibits the propagation and discussion of any ideology or policies of political parties. The only aim is to spread voter literacy. The club through its activity based approach, endeavors to reach out to young citizens who have either exercised their franchise for the first time or are to attain eligibility as voters in the near future. Working under the aegis of the Chief Electoral Officer, the ELC proposes to hold voter education programs across the state of Jharkhand in the form of Election Olympiad, Mock Elections seminars and discussions enlightening voters to learn the various dimensions of electoral process.
