Networking is the key to success in today’s job market.Talk with people you know and gradually begin to reach out to those you don't know. Do the following:
Collect business cards.
Leave or send a copy of your résumé with those you have contacted.
Write a thank-you note after any lunch or coffee meeting; stay in touch periodically.
Remember: The last one out the door or off the phone is usually the first one remembered when a position becomes available.
Generate your own list of potential networking contacts by using the sources listed below, then contact these individuals and interview them using the “Research Interviewing technique” suggested below.
College Friends, Fraternity/Sorority Members, School/Alumni Association
Co-workers (present & past)
Your Parents’ Friends and Neighbors
Doctors, Realtors, Pharmacists and Professors
Church Members and Local Business Owners
Insurance Agents and Accountants
Sales People who call on you
Initiate a new contact with a request for information about how he/she started their career.
Ask for just 10 or 15 minutes to discuss their company’s operations, asking about employment trends in their industry, and long-range corporate plans.
Don’t ask for a job interview, ask for information–information about opportunities within their company and other companies of which they are aware.
Here are some frequently asked interview questions. Prior to the interview prepare and rehearse answers to these questions.
Tell me about yourself.
Tell me about your social media use and skills.
Can you give me an example of how you have contributed to your present employer's bottom line?
What are your salary expectations?
How did you like your last job and why did you leave?
What are your career goals for the next 5 years? The next 10 years?
What are some of your strengths? Some of your weaknesses?
If we make you an offer, how long do you plan to stay with the company?
Please discuss the work environment or office culture where you think you would be happy and feel fulfilled.
What is your ideal position and career path?
Is there anything you would like to say to close the interview?
