The interview is the high point of the marketing campaign–it is also the most stressful. Relax and remind yourself of past career successes and that you are a talented individual with specific skills to market. Remember, your role is to interview a prospective employer as well as interview for a position.
For Interviewing Success
Research the company thoroughly. Use online research tools—Google, IA, Yahoo, MSN.
Be punctual and appropriately dressed.
Be enthusiastic—managers love to hire individuals who are excited about their company, products, and services.
Listen intently to the interviewer. Take notes—just a few.
Ask questions regarding the responsibilities of the position and how to meet the requirements of the position. You might ask about the training the company will provide.
Substitute strengths for weaknesses. Don’t tell the interviewer what you lack in qualifications; state the specific skills that you have and how quickly you acquired them.
Attitude and confidence are very important. (be respectful, cordial, sincere, positive, and maintain eye contact).
Be brief but thorough in your explanations. Stay on track!
Follow up with a thank-you note (should be either a handwritten or typewritten email note).
Your objective is to obtain a career position and the interviewer’s objective is to solve a problem (finding a qualified candidate). You must demonstrate to the interviewer that you understand and can solve their problem. Rather than say, “I increased sales . . . ,” say, “I understand that you need to expand your sales activity within the . . . market and I have been successful . . .”
Here are some frequently asked interview questions. Prior to the interview prepare and rehearse answers to these questions.
Tell me about yourself.
Tell me about your social media use and skills.
Can you give me an example of how you have contributed to your present employer's bottom line?
What are your salary expectations?
How did you like your last job and why did you leave?
What are your career goals for the next 5 years? The next 10 years?
What are some of your strengths? Some of your weaknesses?
If we make you an offer, how long do you plan to stay with the company?
Please discuss the work environment or office culture where you think you would be happy and feel fulfilled.
What is your ideal position and career path?
Is there anything you would like to say to close the interview?
