2025 Registration Is Open, All Riders Must Be Registered Prior To The First Practice.
The EHS & SBC Mountain Bike Team is led by a Head coach, Jose Ortega, and a Team Director, Allyn Olsen.
We are a volunteer-driven organization, coaches and volunteers are vital to our operations because we cannot conduct practices without sufficient adult supervision. These selfless individuals are parents and community members who share a passion for mountain biking and dedicate their time to ride with our team two to three times a week during the summer and fall seasons. Interestingly, many of our coaches do not have their own riders on the team.
All of our volunteers and coaches are required to have background checks, and take risk management, concussion and abuse awareness training. Additionally, coaches are trained in first aid, CPR and have taken the Teaching Basic Bike Skills course. Typically, we have 8 student-athletes with 2 coaches; one of those coaches is required to have first aid/CPR training.
If you're interested in getting involved, please contact us or visit the SoCal Coaching Center.
Are you interested in volunteering as a coach? Even if you consider yourself a beginner, with only 1-2 years of riding experience we would love your help. You can attend when it fits with your schedule; no time requirements and you do not need to be a parent of a rider to help. Perks of being a coach include league discounts on bike-related items and memberships, and team discounts with TREK bikes, Specialized and Kenda Tire discount, and many more.
Navigate to the JOIN tab for more information.
Below are our two coaching levels.
Level One - "Assistant Coach": Rides with a group but does not lead. An extra set of eyes and encouragement. Often rides as a sweep rider at the back of the small group. Meets minimum level to ride with student-athletes. Approximately two-hour training online. Cost: $38 for background check (subsequent years only $11).
Level Two - "Coach": More advanced certifications and classes including risk management, first aid/CPR, on-the-bike skills classes, continuing ed, annual requirements, etc. Leads a small group of riders at practice.
Not comfortable being a coach? There are many ways to get involved…even a tiny bit of help keeps this team going! We all pitch in to make the EHS & SBC MTB team AMAZING. Help coach, offer help at races, set up for events, and help us fix bikes!

I come from a passion of biking, being a rider of the team for 7 years to now being able to coach and give back. I love being able to share my skills and knowledge of biking with our riders alongside watching the next generation of skilled riders grow.

I have been riding bikes since I was three years old and absolutely love mountain biking. I raced mountain bikes when I was younger and was a coach for this team when it was just beginning. I am now back with my child on the team.

Mountain biking is my passion—it's about pushing limits, embracing the outdoors, and growing both as a rider and a person. I’m grateful to share that journey with others and inspire kids to love the sport as much as I do.
