Bobgin's Pumping Engine
A coal mill with a water-powered beam pumping engine was built here in 1726 just after the Causey Arch was constructed.
Bobgin's Pumping Engine used water from the Bobgins Burn. One end of the beam was powered by waterwheels to create a rocking motion. The other end was attached to pumps in the shaft.
In this case the bob (beam) gins (engine) was used to raise water from an area of mine workings around East Tanfield.
The shaft of the engine has been capped and marked by a concrete bollard. To the right of the bollard, you can see the remains of the engine house which is now covered up by vegetation. Walking further up the path away from the Causey Burn, you can see more of the original stonework to your left.
