About EEL 2026

The Workshop on Experimental and Empirical Methods in Linguistics (EEL) trains students and researchers in the experimental, statistical, and computational methods central to language science. More broadly, the workshop introduces participants to theoretical and applied frameworks that conceptualize language from a functional perspective, including domains such as language evolution, language processing, acquisition, structure and form, variation, and language use.

The previous editions of the workshop were hosted by IIT Delhi (2017), IIT-BHU (2018), and IIT Kanpur (2025). The salient features of the workshop are lab sessions in experiment design, data analysis with R, Bayesian modeling, and expository keynotes on current trends that showcase how a functionalist perspective of language along with statistical and computational methods can be used for theory building as well as to solve real-world problems.

The 4th edition of the workshop, EEL 2026, will be hosted by the Department of Cognitive Science at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur on July 1-5, 2026. The workshop will have two tracks in parallel. The participants have to choose one of the tracks based on what they want to learn and certain prerequisites.

1. Experimental track (No prerequisites)

• Statistical Data Analysis using R

• Experiment Design/Paradigm

2. Modeling track (Prerequisite: R programming)

• Bayesian Modeling

• Computational cognitive models

Who can apply?

Students or researchers who intend to pursue research in psycholinguistics, corpus linguistics, or computational cognitive science and would like to learn experimental design, data analysis techniques, computational modeling, and corpus analysis. The workshop would be ideal for students who are starting their research in these areas.

Registration fee:

If selected for the workshop, you will have to pay the registration fee of Rs. 2000/-. The registration fee will only cover your accommodation and tea/snacks on the venue. You will be provided with accommodation in student hostels. You have to cover your travel expenses on your own.
