QIP-CEP Workshop on Experimental & Empirical Methods in Linguistics

The NLP Research Lab at IIT (BHU), Varanasi will organize an 8-day workshop on ‘Experimental and Empirical Methods in Linguistics’ from 4th June to 11th June 2018. The workshop aims to introduce participants with methods and tools used in experimental and corpus/computational linguistics. The workshop will be a combination of talks and lab sessions. Talks will provide an opportunity to learn about some current trends in psycho/neuro-linguistics, computational linguistics and cognitive linguistics. Lab sessions will familiarize the participants with R programming, experiment design, data analysis and corpus linguistics.

It will be a collaboration of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Humanistic Studies, IIT (BHU), Varanasi.

Workshop Venue: Conference Hall, Dept. of Chemical Engg. (directly above the Gopal Tripathi Auditorium), IIT (BHU), Varanasi


Salient features of the workshop:

(1) Lab sessions on how to design and run a psycholinguistic experiment.

(2) Lab sessions on data analysis of different types of experimental data (e.g. grammaticality judgment, reaction time, eye-tracking data, etc.). We will use R to do all the analysis.

(3) Lab sessions on basics of corpus linguistics using NLTK.

(4) Lectures on some current trends in psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, computational linguistics and cognitive science.

(5) Participants will be provided a certificate after successful completion of the workshop.

Important Note:

You are required to bring your own laptop, so that you can use it for practice session/lab. We will soon send instructions about the reading material and the installation of required software on your laptop for these sessions.
