Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
In my Educational Psychology class taken at Trinity Christian College, I was assigned a test construction project. Through completing this project, I believe that I have satisfied Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 7: Assessment. By completing this assignment, I demonstrated knowledge indicator 7B, which states: "understands that assessment is a means of evaluating how students learn and what they know and are able to do in order to meet the Illinois Learning Standards." I have demonstrated that I understand the purpose of assessment and how to use it to evaluate student performance and understanding. Through my test analysis I have also demonstrated knowledge indicator 7G, which states: "understands how to make data-driven decisions using assessment results to adjust practices to meet the needs of each student." It is important to use data when making academic decisions for children, as often times this is the only objective evidence of student performance available. Through constructing my psychology test, I have also met knowledge indicator 7E, which states: "understands how to select, construct, and use assessment strategies and instruments for diagnosis and evaluation of learning and instruction."
