The artifact presented in standard 6 is a picture book unit I created for third grade students based around the picture book Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Pena. I created this artifact in my Elementary Literacy course in the Summer of 2018 at Trinity Christian College.
This artifact connects to standard six because my picture book unit is a reading lesson plan that connects writing and oral communication with the students and the teacher. The activities I present in my unit are geared toward students who are auditory learners, visual learners, and kinesthetic learners. The performance indicator 6I states, “Selects, modifies, and uses a wide range of printed, visual, or auditory materials, and online resources appropriate to the content areas and the reading needs and levels of each student (including ELLs, and struggling and advanced readers).” Each of the reading activities included in my picture book unit demonstrate my differentiation throughout the lesson. As a future educator, I know it is important to differentiate my instruction for all of my students so they can achieve and reach their goals for the content we are learning.
The knowledge indicator 6S states, "stimulates discussion in the content areas for varied instructional and conversational purposes." Throughout my unit, students will be asked and encouraged to engage in discussion for both instructional and conversational purposes. Discussion is frequent throughout the unit I have shared on this page. The discussions had in class will stimulate both academic and social growth in my students.
This artifact has shown my ability to differentiate lessons for a variety of students. Incorporating listening, writing, drawing and group work into my unit will ensure that every type of learner's needs are met. I look forward to continuing my education and learning more ways to differentiate instruction and reach more student's needs as I grow as an educator.
