Proposition 1

The first proposition, “Teachers are committed to students and their learning” (NBPTS, 2019), refers to a teacher’s need to put their student’s learning as the highest priority in the classroom. This means that teachers may need to adapt their teaching styles to meet the needs of their students, such as in the case with students that have learning disabilities, or making extra time after classes to allow their students to consult with them on class content. Whatever the scenario may be, a teacher’s most important role is to teach the content that they’ve been commissioned to teach, but more importantly, a student needs to understand what’s being taught, and a teacher must use the resources at their disposal to make sure that their students are retaining the information that they’re teaching.

To demonstrate my commitment to teaching this discipline and my attention to detail that I take teaching it, here's a breakdown of how I use slow motion video capture, or "slomo" to help myself and my clients learn more effectively in the gym:

Rationale:

Parkour is a complicated discipline that requires timing, precision, coordination, balance, strength, and agility to come together in unison in order to pull off an array of impressive physical feats. This isn't alway necessarily communicated by just demonstrating the technique, because most techniques are dynamic, and the nuances of the technique are subtle, and often happen too quickly for the naked eye to appreciate, leaving the client stumbling in the dark, thinking that they're doing one thing, but their body's doing another, leading to frustration and burnout.

However, with the power of technology at our fingertips, slow motion video capture allows the coach to capture the nuances and analyze them with their student. This benefits both parties, because it helps the client/student to see what they're doing, but more importantly, it tells the coach how they need to proceed in order to teach the technique to their client more effectively, honing in on anyone particular element of the movement and refining it.

It also allows the coach to view their own technique to make sure that they're doing it properly as well. It's important for the coach to review their own technique from time to time on two counts; to ensure that they're performing it properly, but also to analyze the finer points of their technique in order to give them a better understanding of all the elements of the movement itself.

Reflection:

Slowmo is an effective teaching tool because it allows student and teacher alike to comprehensively analyze the movement. This attention to detail is necessary in this particular field, and demonstrates dedication to perfecting the practice of the student by pinpointing the strengths and flaws in that particular movement, and that of the coach by being able to see exactly what needs improvement, expediting the process and enabling them to give concise, specific feedback to their student. This increase the speed in which a student learns, aiding in skill acquisition, and mastering the content faster with a better understanding of the content.
