Stay in the classroom while your volunteer is present
Welcome the volunteer as a guest presenter to the class.
Help the volunteer set-up technology before the session, if needed.
Communicate classroom guidelines and school rules to your volunteer.
Exchange contact information with your volunteer - we recommend sharing a phone number in case of emergencies on the day of a scheduled visit.
Discuss food allergies/acceptable treats with your volunteer.
Handle discipline issues/student needs if they arise - you are responsible for classroom management.
Provide the volunteer with information on demographics of the class and what the students are learning that might be relevant to the JA learning experience. This could also include any unique dynamics or circumstances in the classroom.
Support the volunteer by directing students and maintaining order during the JA session.
Suggest ways your volunteer can engage all students in the JA experience.
Use the provided playlist of videos throughout the program
Review the video prior to the session, and use it to help structure the introduction
Facilitate the activity portion of the session, guiding students through the discussions and activities as described in the volunteer guide
Think about what students are learning that might be relevant to the JA learning experience
Think like a volunteer - do you have any experiences you want to share with your class that are relevant to the topic?
As the Fall semester starts, please respond to our initial outreach with your class details for the year, including preferred schedule and requested volunteer (if any).
Before your program start date -
Respond to your volunteer's outreach and questions.
Let us know if you do not hear from your volunteer once they have been placed, or if your start date shifts dramatically.
Complete your pre-program assessment using the correct ID's for your students. If you need help obtaining these, let us know.
During your program - let us know how things are going. We will check in with you and your volunteer.
After your program is complete
Verify your class details in writing but responding to our 'Class Confirmation' email. This will conclude contact for the year from us, but we MUST receive verification.
Complete the post-program assessment.
If you have feedback for us, or for the JA USA team, please provide it via the relevant forms.
If you are new to JA, connect with us to schedule an educator orientation. We would love to talk through the program process with you!
Share the volunteer flier with parents/guardians/associates who may be interested in leading the program in your classroom.
As your start date approaches, share with your students' caring adults a little about what to expect from Junior Achievement, and how they can support their students' learning throughout.
Look over the educator guide to see how JA fits with what your students are currently learning.
Communicate with your volunteer regarding scheduling and any questions they have. If they would like to arrange a pre-program visit, please schedule this with them.
We ship program materials directly from our supplier to the school, so if they have not arrived at least 2 weeks before your start date, let us know.
Take pictures of JA in action to share with parents, your volunteer and their organization, and with Junior Achievement! We are always thrilled to see students at work in the classroom.
Support your volunteer in the classroom - they could be new to facing a group of students and may need a guiding hand to get everyone engaged.
Make your classroom device available if volunteers need to use technology. We recommend you take the time to access learn.ja.org prior to the program starting to ensure smooth operation during sessions.
Let us know how things are going, or if you have any questions at all. We are more than happy to help! We will always check in mid-way through your program, but if you need help outside of this, always reach out.
Please do not have your volunteer visit if you have a short-term sub. We ask instead that you rearrange the visit. If you will have a long-term substitute during the JA program for medical leave, please connect us and your volunteer with them also.
Verify your class details with your JA point of contact. Junior Achievement must receive written confirmation of your class details each year.
Thank your volunteer (see below for some ideas on how you can show appreciation).
Share your feedback! We want to hear what you have to say about Junior Achievement and your experience as an educator with our programs - JAEI Educator Survey.
If you have program content feedback for JA USA, please submit that here: JA USA Feedback.
Share with guardians any pictures, and a little about what students learned from the program and their volunteer.
Volunteers selflessly give their time to serve as a role model for your students. They love to be appreciated by you and the class they have built a connection with over the course of the JA program! Here are a few ideas you could implement to say ‘thank you’:
Have students write thank you notes, with their favorite part of the program, to give the volunteer during their final visit.
Write a thank you card to your volunteer yourself.
Send an email to your volunteer following the final visit.
Share any pictures you took with the volunteer and your students' responsible adults.
Call your volunteer out on our JAEI Facebook page HERE. Or provide positive feedback via our Educator survey - let us at JA know how well they did.
Ask them back again next year!
