Education Round Rock is working on getting Due Process for our School Bus Drivers and ALL of our wonderful Educational Support Personnel! For too long, RRISD has taken the work of our Drivers for granted. Without Transportation, kids wouldn't be able to get to school which would absolutely impact our funding.
Due Process protects workers by requiring management to issue warnings and give time for the employee to correct the issue before being fired. Currently, a worker could be fired at any moment for any reason at all and there would be few if any consequences for management. At a time when we are already struggling to hire new drivers, it only makes sense to keep the ones we have.
RRISD has had such a hard time recruiting Bus Drivers, in fact, that they have turned to hiring a contractor to fill empty positions. This contractor likely receives well over the starting salary of our drivers, but the workers they contract get a fraction of that pay. It is unfair to the contract workers and it is unfair to Bus Drivers that the district would not pass that cost along as a raise to current drivers. Maybe the district would have an easier time recruiting for vacant positions if they just offered new and current drivers what they are giving to the contract company.
Of course, this isn't the only problem facing our Bus Drivers. Management has been forcing our Drivers to wear uncomfortable shoes and forced many drivers to suffer. All drivers should be able to pick their own non-slip shoes and RRISD should help offset this cost.
If you are tired of these conditions and want things to change at Transportation, join us today and help lead the fight to make your workplace a better place to work.
