Hi! I am Eduardo Dorrego López, high school mathematics teacher and researcher in the History of Mathematics.
Academic Training
I studied Mathematics (minor in Pure Mathematics) at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), where I also obtained my Master’s degree in the Department of Algebra. Later on I got enrolled into the “Doctorate in Mathematics” program at the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Seville (IMUS) obtaining my PhD in History of Mathematics under the supervision of Prof. José Ferreirós (2021): "Irrationality and transcendence in the 18th and 19th centuries. A contextualized study of J. H. Lambert's Mémoire (1761/1768)" (link). As part of my PhD training, I carried out a research stay at the University of Oxford as a visiting student in the History of Mathematics Research Group, under the supervision of Dr. Christopher Hollings (link).
As a researcher
My research focuses on the development of irrational and transcendental quantities in the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as on the work of Johann Heinrich Lambert. After the defense of my dissertation, I enjoyed a fellowship by the Mathematical Institute of the University of Seville in order to work on Lagrange under the supervision of Prof. José Ferreirós (Dep. of Logic, Faculty of Philosophy).
I am part of two Research Groups: "HUM-717: Historia y Filosofía de las Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas" (link) and: "Grupo IMUS de Historia de las Matemáticas" (link). Besides, I am one of the organizers of the Permanent Seminar: "Seminario de Historia de las Matemáticas GHM - RSME" organized by the History of Mathematics Group of the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME) in collaboration with the IMUS. These conferences are held online and upload to the Youtube channel of IMUS (link). From 2024, I am member of the Spanish Society for the History of Sciences and Techniques (SEHCYT) and the CEMat's Comission for the History of Mathematics (link).
As professor of mathematics
As a mathematics teacher, I am aware of the importance and usefulness of History in classroom. I think that History and Philosophy are necessary to understand methods, concepts and ideas in an appropiate manner. You can see the StemBach proyect in the History and Philosophy of Science recently implanted in my High School here ("Actividad de innovación e investigación educativa").
