Digital Communication is one of the main methods of communication in today's world. Writing letters has become a thing of the past. Now most commonly, text, social media, or email are the communication methods people use from day to day. These modern day methods of communication are made-up of digital technology. Digital Communication provides people with opportunities to see and communicate with one another through cell phones, tablets, computers, or any other smart device. In the article on "Mastering Digital Communication in the Workplace", Powell describes each of these communication platforms in-depth while also discussing five characteristics that set them apart from the traditional methods. More frequent interaction, more participation, more decentralization, more egalitarian and less hierarchical. These five things separate digital communication from traditional in Powell's eyes.(Powell, 2020)
Without even looking at data, it is easy to imagine a great increase of digital use. When looking at the data compiled by Hillyer, M. for the World Economic Forum, it is amazing to see how much growth has happened in the digital world in such a relatively short amount of time. The fact that in just ten years, Facebook went from zero users to almost 2.5 billion is a testament to how valuable people find digital communication and outreach.
