Noun
Noun is a word that names a person, animal, thing, place, or idea.
It can be both singular and plural. Things that often go together with nouns are
the determinants, which are a, an, the.
Nouns have different functions. They can act as a subject, a direct object, a secondary object, a subject extension, and an object of conjunctions.
Examples of nouns include woman, office, enjoyment, etc. But nouns can also be classified further. Each type has different characteristics and methods of use.
Today we will present the types of nouns that you should know as follows:
Common Noun (general noun) is a non-specific noun refer to people, animals, things, general places without specificity, such as nurse, boy, school, rabbit and pencil, etc. and Common Noun can be divided into the following 5 types:
1. Countable Noun is a noun that can be counted, and specify the number in numbers, how many there are can be both singular and plural. If they are plural, they usually add -s or -es, except for some nouns that use a plural transformation. Examples of countable nouns include five books, three friends, and one pen.
2. Uncountable Noun is a noun that cannot be counted, and specify the number in numbers, how many there are Nouns can be names of abstract ideas, properties, or things. That are too small or too difficult to count. Uncountable nouns are singular and do not have a plural form, for example water, air, knowledge.
3. Collective Noun is a noun that is a group of people or things.
Examples of collective nouns include family, herd, class, army, and group, etc.
4. Concrete Noun is a noun that can be perceived with all 5 senses which include seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching. Concrete noun is a noun that helps English learners speak and write clearly and visually.
Examples of Concrete nouns include smoke, coffee, teacher, bitterness, and radio, etc.
5. Abstract Noun is a noun that is the opposite of Concrete Noun because Abstract noun is a noun that cannot be perceived or felt with the five senses. It has no shape, cannot be touched, cannot be seen, cannot be heard or smell. It represents qualities, status, actions, and thoughts such as sympathy, belief, love, hatred, and ego, etc.
Proper Noun(demonstrative noun) is a noun that is a proper name, used to refer to people, animals, things, and places. It can be observed from the use of capital letters at the beginning, such as:
People/animal names: Richard, Jane, Peter, Kitty, Rocky
Product brands: Starbucks, Apple, Honda, Pandora, Gucci
Location: Oxford University, Birmingham Palace, Europe, Greece, Bangkok
Day/month/holiday/festival: Monday, Friday, January, March, Valentine’s Day
Nationality: Thai, American, Chinese, Ghanaian, South African
