Edgar Rice Burroughs:British First Editions

Listed here, with illustrations, are all the British first editions. Burroughs books were reprinted in Britain, usually a few years after the US edition. Methuen was the first publisher to print the titles until Burroughs fell out with them and John Lane took over for a while. Methuen returned to pick-up some of the later titles. It is worth noting that Methuen used the magazine wording for 'Tarzan and the Ant Men'  and the first part of 'The Mucker' was, for some reason, first printed in Britain.  The second part was published later as 'The Man Without a Soul'

The author's work fell out of favour in Britain in the 1940s until Goulden reprinted them in paperback in the late 1950s with some success. However it was the resurgence in the 1960s when the book begain to take off with the publication of the 'Tarzan' and 'Mars' titles by Four Square. Tandem published many other title in the 1970s.
