Enjoy a look into my Second Grade Classroom! I currently teach at Carlson Elementary School in Van Dyke Public Schools which is about 20 minutes north of Detroit. I have 26 second graders (7 and 8 year olds). Students in my class and district come into school looking for a stable safe place. Most students are coming from poverty where general safety, parental changes, and food insecurity can impact their daily lives. When setting up my classroom, I had a goal to create this safe space for all of my students that allows them to feel comfortable and allow them to be successful as possible.
One of my favorite classroom traditions is to do a March Madness Book Tournament. I pick 16 picture books, and throughout the month, we read and vote on which ones we like best until we have a winner. This year, my classroom winner was When The Fireflies Come . This activity allows my students to get excited about reading and explore a variety of books while doing so.
Parent Teacher Communication
This is an example of the parent teacher communication in my classroom. Every week, I post this file on our Class Dojo page to update parents on what we learned throughout the week, important reminders, things to do at home, and important upcoming dates. I feel that doing this allows parents to stay involved and to stay informed about our classroom and journey in second grade.
