Comparison of Pre and Post Filtration

On the left is sand and silt from a horse track mixed with tap water. The right is a sample of the same water after being ran through 40 cm of biochar.

Filtered Water Samples

Samples of contaminated water after being ran through 10, 20, 30, and 40 cm of biochar.

Quantitative Results

No quantitative results were able to be obtained. After processing the dirty water samples through the Master Sizer 3000, it was found there were not enough particulates present in any of the samples to get a particle size distribution. Given the machine can detect particles down to 10nm in size, it can be safely said that the biochar is capable of removing contaminants 2 microns and larger. This result was a huge success and provides evidence that biochar is a viable filter media for the intended use of removing coliform. It cannot be said with 100% certainty that all E.coli was removed, but this was at the very least a promising result.
