American Goldfinches like seeds they also like fresh buds off the tree and sap and bark from small tree branches. They can get this food from Thistle, Sunflowers, and Nyjer plants. It provides shelter from predators such as cats, dogs, foxs coyotes and racoons. In the garden they use Speckled Alder, Purple Coneflowers, grass, Maple trees, Western Red Cedar, Oak, Thistle Nyjer plants and Sunflowers. We should care about them because they are a good pollinator and spread the pollen around. As well as the garden gives shelter and food and habitat to American Goldfinches.
American Goldfinches like to live in a habitat that is very open and with trees and shrubs. You may find one at a farm. There nests are made out of strands of weeds and vines.
It is migratory ranging from mid- Alberta to North Carolina during the breeding season, and from just south of the Canada–United States border to Mexico during the winter. But it is a north American bird.
American Goldfinches sound very chirpy and can get annoying sometimes. It is a high pitch voice that almost squeaks.
I wouldn't say that this specific species is a risk but other birds like it are. Did you know that 36 million birds around the world are killed each year. They are killed from illegal haunting, they are hunted four food but these birds aren't, they are hunted for sport and they are captured for house pets.
