Project overview

Pizza boxes were not acceptable as a recycling item by loudoun county until August 2023. I worked with loudoun county general services to get the guidelines updated after my research and communication with the recycling facilities.

Unlike corporate message usually describes that pizza boxes are recyclable,  it is still not acceptable if it's greasy. I am working on raising awareness about the right way of recycling pizza boxes. This seems like a small effort, but numbers support the fact that even a small effort can result into thousand of tonnes of cardboard going back into the recycling pipeline.

Story of what was happening in a visual presentation. No matter which bin you put the Pizza box in, it was ending up in a landfill.

How it all started

After my younger brother's birthday party when I was recycling the Pizza boxes, my friend's mom mentioned that Pizza Boxes are not recyclable. I was stunned. I could read 'Recyclable' on the Pizza box but then she mentioned Loudoun County guidelines say it is not recyclable. That raised a question in my mind. Are we cheated by the 'Domino's' branding or Loudoun county is unaware that the Pizza box is a cardboard box? That is where I started my journey.
